Project Born Learning

Born Learning is United Way Worldwide flagship campaign aimed at the overall well-being and development of the new born in its most formative years (0-6 years).

United Way Delhi is currently supporting local government improve quality of early child care services for marginalized population through a holistic intervention across 22 schools and 20 Anganwadis in Delhi NCR. Under this project, 1017 students in nursery schools and 1300 children along with their mothers in Anganwadis will benefit from the intervention.

Program goals and objectives

Goal:
The United Way Delhi Born Learning program aims at children in the age of 0-6 are at their most vulnerable stage of physical, emotional and psychological growth to attain the right kind of stimulation for growth, ensuring their development is not hampered for life as there can be little correction possible in the later stages of life.

Objectives:

Born Learning is a United Way Worldwide program aiming at the overall well-being and development of the new born in its most formative years (0-6 years) of growth and development, which often gets neglected.

Four Pillars of the Program:

UWD’s Born Learning program attempts to target this age group children and their positive growth stimulation through the focus on creating:

  • Child-friendly Infrastructure
  • Nutritional care – Growth monitoring and facilitation of information and awareness, assessment and referrals
  • Improving the learning environment
  • Community Engagement – Engaging the family members and community towards positive development of their child.

Child Friendly Infrastructure

  • Increase in the enrollment rates of the students.
  • Encourages peer learning in the lasses.
  • Provides a safe, warm and welcoming environment for learning.
  • Addresses issues of class management and Cleanliness in the classrooms.

Learning Tools

  • Enables students to learn in innovative and interactive ways.
  • Smooth transition of the students from nursery to main stream schooling therefore catering to the issues of learning
    gaps amongst the Students.
  • Development of motor skills of the children.
  • Enhance capacities of the nursery teachers to include innovative ways of teaching.

Community and parent engagement

  • Age appropriate growth of the students.
  • Increase in the regularity of the students.
  • Informed parents about home based care on health and hygiene.
  • Parents shall be aware of easily available and affordable foods for their kids.

INTERVENTION AT ANGANWADI

In a span of 3-5 years, it is expected that within the selected Anganwadi centres:

  • All children will be provided with a conducive learning environment and teaching learning materials  to achieve the school readiness required for entry to formal schooling ( Primary Grades)
  • All Bal / Anganwadi Vikas Samitis will be constituted and activated to support the local Anganwadi Centre in all its activities including early childhood education, health and nutrition
  • All Bal / Anganwadi Vikas Samitis will run and monitor regular programs for health checkups for children below 6 years of age
  • All Bal / Anganwadi Vikas Samitis will run and monitor regular programs for awareness regarding hygiene and sanitation and optimal nutrition for children below 6 years of age
  • All Bal / Anganwadi Vikas Samitis will provide a platform for mothers’ meetings for the awareness building regarding good practices for health, hygiene , sanitation and nutrition at home children below 6 years of age

Key Activities – school intervention:

Base Line: To establish priority areas and plan accordingly for an impactful project, a baseline survey was carried out with sample students. The survey assessed infrastructural needs assessment, growth monitoring recording, and assessment of the basic learning capacities and growth of the children in terms of their motor skills, speech, etc.

The course curriculum and methodology of the class instructions was then planned based on the baseline survey that is acting as a tool to monitor and evaluate the project on periodic basis. Pre photo documentation created for each school categorized by specific activities.

Provisioning of child friendly in nursery classes:

Colorful furniture:  Most of the students attending the school are forced to sit on the floor for classes as there is a huge dearth of desks. Also, these students tend to have a high drop-out rate as they are not school ready. Therefore, UWD provisioned desks benefitting children, from the new batch to start with the new class set ups. The specifications of the desks and cupboards have been obtained from the school authorities. UWD procured desks by undertaking a rigorous and transparent vendor selection process by circulating a RFQ (request for quotation) from eligible vendors who have significant previous experience of providing desks to government institutions.

The UWD team inspected a sample as part of a quality check and once the desks are delivered, acknowledgement for the same obtained from school principals.

Interlocking Rubber mats, rides and slides: UWD understands the needs of the children to have a comfortable play area, which requires a basic infrastructure such as interlocking rubber mats, rides and slides. These were provided to the schools where separate play room/extra room is available for the students or where the number of students is less so as to fit the play area within the classroom without the need for an extra room.

Beautification of classrooms– This physical changes/beautifications form a part of a basic factor of making the classrooms attractive to the minds of the children and being able to retain them in the class to facilitate the further process of learning and growth. For this purpose, the classrooms were painted colorfully, charts were put up to grab attention and help them learn, both inside the classroom and outside in the corridors.

Learning Improvement tools:

Educational Tools and toys- Magnetic alphabets, puzzles and blocks, chart papers, clay, sand pool, colors, picture books, etc are important tools for children to learn in a fun way, which ensures initiating learning among the children to prepare for the formal learning education.

AV– Audio/Visual tools are an important tool to facilitate the objectives of this program in terms of the learning outcomes. For the same, instruments like a projector/LCD TV, a pen drive and a speaker for the purpose of improving the cognitive, listening and language skills of the children through these mediums of audios and visuals.

Teacher Trainings – The teachers are given support for improving the learning environment, especially on the use of audio-visual tools and digital content.

Key Activities – Anganwadi Intervention:

Renovation of existing infrastructure:

Several Anganwadis are now on renovation to make the space visitor friendly and provision of basic infrastructure facilities so that the Anganwadi work runs smoothly. The renovation process started after necessary permissions were obtained from relevant Gov’t department.

Community & Care-giver Engagement:

Trainings of the families and the communities to prepare them for a quality home based care through sessions/workshops/discussions/trainings on issues like nutritional care, learning and behavioral development of children, psychological and emotional well-being, child protection, immunization, health & hygiene habits and inculcating physical well-being through promotion of outdoor games.
